Inclement Weather

Turpentine Creek Wildlife Refuge does suspend tours during extreme weather conditions. We do not typically close for weather like rain or wind, but it depends on the severity of the weather. The team will monitor weather situations to make the call to suspend tours at the Refuge when the weather is deemed too dangerous for visitors and staff. Some weather conditions that might constitute suspending tours at the Refuge are lightning, tornados, fires, extreme temperatures, blizzards, freezing rain, icy road conditions, and other violent acts of nature. If any of these situations are predicted please check for tour information on our social media accounts or call the refuge at 479-253-5841 to double-check.

Pets At The Refuge

We do not allow pets on our tours or around our animals. ADA service animals are allowed but not support animals, comfort animals, or house pets. Please do NOT leave your pet in your car or ask our team to watch your animal. We cannot watch your pet in our gift shop for liability reasons and if you leave an animal in a hot car we will inform the authorities. If you bring your pet we will not allow you on the tour and request that you take your pet back to your home or hotel before returning.

There are 2 rooms that pets can stay in over night (with a pet fee), but the pets cannot be taken on tours, should be kept on a leash at all times, and cannot be taken in the Discovery Area.

What To Do At Turpentine Creek Wildlife Refuge

All activities can be canceled due to weather or if major projects/training is happening. Please check with the gift shop the day you arrive to see if events are available that day.

Guided Habitat Tours (Daily)  – The half-mile guided tour takes visitors around to the area where the majority of our large cats’ habitats are located. The only way to view these habitats is during a guided tour. The tour is lead by one of our biologist/zoologist interns. Tours leave every hour on the hour. (Tour times listed above).

Discovery Area (Daily) – Venture around the open area of our park and see all of our smaller animal residents at your own pace. Stroll down our bear tunnel to see our bears and some of our big cats, before or after taking one of our hourly guided habitat tours.

Behavior Management Program (Most Days Before The First Tour of the Day) – Used to both encourage animals to partake in stress-reducing enrichment activity and also, allowing for animal care staff to more efficiently examine potential health issues and perform routine medical check-ups. TCWR uses a bridge and reward training method. Training with participating animals can currently be seen every day after the last Guided Habitat Walking Tour in the Discovery Tour section of the Refuge.

Educational Programming (Scheduled) – We offer a variety of programs about the animals that call the Refuge home and where they are found in the wild, species conservation, biodiversity, animal adaptations, and so much more. Whether you are a first time or returning visitor, school group, scout troop, or any special groups; we have something for everyone of all ages to see, do, and learn! Click here to visit our Education section to see our upcoming educational events.

Exclusive Behind The Scenes Tours (Saturdays) – Get a private, behind the scenes tour of the refuge. See areas not open to the public and learn about what we do at the refuge. Behind the scenes tours, must be scheduled at least 3 days in advance and are an additional charge ($100-$150 per person). Regular entry into the refuge is included with behind the scenes tours.
